"What ongoing professional development is important for sustaining professional growth?"
Professional development that forces us to look at how we teach and what we can do better. Not only that, but professional development should give teachers the necessary training or at least refer them to a helpful source that will allow them to improve their methods.
In my case, I need professional growth that helps me to stay current on new developments in the library, media and technology fields. This program is a form of professional development for all of us who are in it.
Effective professional development offerings are not usually one shot deals, where you receive instruction and then never have any follow up. I could make a long list of skills and/or information I have acquired in classes and professional growth opportunities and have forgotten because I didn't review them later. Part of that is my fault, but part of the problem is how learning opportunities are structured sometimes.

Ongoing sustainable staff development is the key. While the training must be delivered in a timely manner to meet and instructors needs, you are so right that it has to be ongoing. One and done is usually very ineffective.
Dan,
I feel the same way. Professional development that helps teachers hone their skills and develop their methods are key to advancing the instructional practices and the student learning in a classroom. Good luck in this endeavor,
Bill
